Why Is My AC Not Cooling?

When your air conditioner is running but not cooling your home, it can be frustrating—especially during peak summer heat. This is one of the most common AC problems we see across the Greater Toronto Area.

Below are the most likely reasons your AC isn’t cooling properly and how Furnace & AC Experts can help resolve them quickly and professionally.

1. Dirty Air Filter

A clogged air filter restricts airflow, making it harder for your AC to cool your home effectively. This can also cause your system to overwork and raise your energy bills.

Solution: Replace or clean your air filter every 1–2 months, especially during the summer.

2. Low Refrigerant or Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is what cools the air inside your home. If your system is low on refrigerant or has a leak, it will struggle to blow cold air.

Solution: Only certified HVAC technicians should check and refill refrigerant. Our licensed team can detect leaks, repair them, and recharge the system safely.

3. Thermostat Issues

If the thermostat is incorrectly set or malfunctioning, it may not signal the system to cool properly.

Solution: Make sure it’s set to “cool” and the temperature is lower than the current room temperature. If the problem persists, we can diagnose and replace a faulty thermostat.

4. Frozen Evaporator Coils

Frozen coils prevent the AC from absorbing heat properly, leading to poor cooling or warm air blowing from vents.

Solution: Turn off the system to let the coils thaw. Call us to check for airflow issues or refrigerant imbalances that may be causing the freeze-up.

5. Blocked or Dirty Outdoor Unit

The outdoor condenser unit releases heat from your home. If it’s blocked by dirt, leaves, or debris, it can’t do its job efficiently.

Solution: Keep at least 2 feet of clearance around the unit and schedule regular cleaning. We can inspect and clean it as part of our AC maintenance service.

6. Electrical Issues or Capacitor Failure

If the system turns on but the fan or compressor doesn’t run, it could be due to a capacitor failure or electrical problem.

Solution: These are dangerous to troubleshoot yourself. Our technicians will safely test, diagnose, and replace any faulty electrical components.

7. Aging System or Faulty Components

If your AC is over 15 years old or frequently breaking down, it may not be worth repairing.

Solution: If repair costs are close to 50% of the price of a new unit, we typically recommend a replacement. Newer Carrier AC systems are far more energy efficient and reliable.

When to Call a Professional for AC Repair

If your air conditioner:

  • Runs constantly but doesn’t cool
  • Makes unusual noises
  • Blows warm air through vents
  • Shows ice buildup on the coils or lines
  • Has weak airflow

It’s time to call a licensed technician.

DIY fixes can only go so far—and in many cases, trying to fix an AC without proper tools or training can lead to more costly repairs.
